The use of alternative materials and optimization loops along the value chain have resulted in a substantial reduction of the total carbon emission. Ypsomed's Ahueni reforestation programme that commits to the highest industry standards is used to offset the remaining carbon footprint.

Ahueni programme to offset the remaining carbon footprint
The word “Ahueni” is Swahili and means recreation, but can also be translated as new creation or regeneration. The term reflects our intentions in the Masai Mara region of Kenya: The regeneration of nature and wildlife.
Ten million trees
With the Ahueni programme, we have committed ourselves to planting at least one million trees in the Masai Mara region over the next ten years. The main objective of the Ahueni programme is to reduce global CO2 emissions. In addition, Kenya urgently needs reforestation. The local tree population is at a record low of around 7%. This circumstance is due to short-sighted use of land in recent decades.

Net zero carbon emissions by 2030
Sustainability is one of Ypsomed's strategic pillars. The company is committed to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Therefore, Ypsomed seeks to drive circular product design that minimises the environmental impact of self-medication along the entire value chain. The YpsoMate Zero is the first step towards reaching this goal. The product shows how the company assumes its social and societal responsibility and it underscores the ambition to pioneer the development of sustainable self-injection device technologies.

The world’s first carbon emission-free autoinjector paves the way toward carbon neutral combination products. On the one hand, the insights gained from YpsoMate Zero inform the overall transition to zero carbon emission self-injection device platforms at Ypsomed. On the other hand, the YpsoMate Zero also reiterates the need to bring together the commitments of partners to achieve a net zero carbon emission combination product.
Enabling the launch of a zero carbon footprint combination product by 2030 requires the involvement and coordination of multiple actors along the value chain in order to adopt the principles of the circular economy and remove its barriers to adoption.
